Many students have seen the construction going on around campus, such as Morse, Roosevelt, etc. While the improvements are much needed, and beneficial for Emporia State, one still might question why some students are living in dorms that have had multiple problems in the first three weeks of classes.
With storms overnight, came flooding on the ground floor of Singular residential hall. The first storm after move in, students had to sleep in the towers lobby overnight to avoid the water while their personal belongings were ruined.
Soon after, the second floor of Singular hall went without hot water for almost 24 hours. After another storm, the air conditioners on some floors stopped working and had to be fixed. Of course, the air conditioner fix was put on the back burner when students’ personal belongings were being destroyed.
The fire alarms going off multiple times, once during the day and again at three in the morning was the latest fiasco. Both Singular and Trusler had to be evacuated. Residents were forced to go outside wrapped in blankets while still in their pajamas.
Why are students paying thousands of dollars for residential halls with issues such as these? ESU should focus their attention on fixing the dorms where students are currently living. It seems ridiculous that the focus is put on extra projects that aren’t needed this year, while students personal belongings and sleep schedules are being disturbed.
We cannot be successful students with so many problems occurring with the living situations around us.
