There was a precise moment when I could feel the blood draining from my body—I felt light headed, ready to pass out at a moment’s notice. I knew I’d have to keep lying there once they were done before I was ready to stand up. But, I knew that this donation would help save three people, and it only took 45 minutes out of my day.
Currently, the U.S. is experiencing a significant blood short age. There will probably never be enough blood for the demand, but in the middle of a pandemic, the demand is higher than ever.
However, only about 38% of the population is able to give blood. Of that 38%, only 5% of people actually give blood, according to the American Red Cross. I was on my way to The Bulletin office when I saw the sign for the blood drive in the Memorial Union. I was done with my classes for the day, so I figured why not?
In the past, I haven’t ever given much though to donating blood as the idea of giving blood still scared me, despite having many piercings and tattoos. So, if I had been planning to do this, I think I would’ve talked myself out it. I’m glad I did this as a spur of the moment thing, and I’m glad I’ve done this now, and will continue doing so in the future.
The actual moments where I felt lightheaded only lasted about 10 minutes, and I continued on as normal the rest of the day. Of course, the after effects are different for everyone. Just make sure to drink lots of water, more than normal, in the hours and days following.
While I know it seems scary at first, donating blood is such an important thing. And so many people could be saved if you were able to take that 45 minutes out of your day to do the same. Though I understand not everyone can donate blood, there are still other things you can do.
The American Red Cross offers a variety of resources, and they’re always looking for monetary donations and volunteers. Every little thing helps, even if we feel like we can’t do much. Currently, they’re looking for donations to help victims of Hurricane Ida.
At the end of the day, the need for blood donors will always be high, but if you’re able, please donate. We may not see the direct impact of our donation, but if there’s even the chance that it could help save people, then it’s something we should do.
