Whether it’s an RSO requirement, service hours for the Honors College, or something else, many Emporia State students are required to complete a certain amount of hours of community service work. Many local volunteer opportunities can be found through Emporia Main Street. Here are some upcoming opportunities you can take advantage of.
Emporia Ladies Open (Dynamic Discs)
Dynamic Discs is looking for volunteers for their ladies-only event on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Peter Pan Park. Volunteers will be required to read and mark names off lists, hand out player packets and answer general questions. Contact: [email protected]
Halfway to Everywhere
The annual Halfway to Everywhere music festival is in need of volunteers during multiple two-to-three-hour time slots on Friday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 11.
There are a variety of positions available, including vendor check-in, box office, being a runner/floater, site set-up, VIP attendant and artist check-in/hospitality. Emporia Senior Center
Every Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Emporia Senior Center hosts Bingo. They are open to volunteers to help with games and serve their snack bar. Contact: [email protected]
SOS, Inc.
SOS, Inc. is a local non-profit dedicated to helping those who are experiencing or have experienced domestic and sexual violence, stalking, human trafficking and child abuse and neglect.
SOS is looking for volunteers to help with childcare for those attending support groups and hotline volunteers for when staff is unavailable.Hours for hotline volunteers vary, but childcare volunteers should be prepared to work every other week for 3 to 4 hours. Emporia Main Street
Emporia Main Street is always looking for volunteers to help with events and activities. The organization also has several committees designated for community volunteers.
The design committee meets on the second Thursday of each month and works to improve Main Street’s physical appearance through maintenance, beautification, decoration and long-term planning. The promotion committee meets once a month and is committed to “(selling) a positive image” of the commercial district through marketing campaigns, retail promotions and events. The business enhancement committee meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month and is focused on enhancing existing businesses and recruiting new ones to help meet consumer needs.
