Emporia State Sister Circle will bring something new to this year’s on-campus prom event; instead of traditional footwear, students will gather in their best pair of sneakers for the sneaker ball.
“I think the sneaker ball brings more of a relaxed atmosphere. You know, you get dressed up, but you have comfy shoes,” said Anna Phillips, president of Sister Circle. “It’s formal, but you’re just wearing more comfortable shoes, like, show your best shoe with your dress and with your outfit.”
According to Phillips, the idea for a sneaker ball was initially conceived by Sister Circle Treasurer Jayda Harris.
“We were trying to think of new ways to improve and to do something different. And she came up with the sneaker ball. And I know from the girls who are on the executive board, we love our shoes, so we thought this would be good to, you know, see what everyone else can bring,” Phillips said.
She sees the new addition to the event as an expression of individuality.
“There are a bunch of different colors you can wear. And I think with having that wide range you can, you can really do anything,” she said.
The Sneaker Ball will take place on Nov. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the Skyline Room located in the Memorial Union. Tickets are on sale now and currently cost $5 per person. They can be purchased through the Sister Circle Instagram page, at tabling events on campus or at the event itself.
Phillips says there are plenty of compelling reasons to attend the sneaker ball.
“To listen to good music, hang out with your friends, get to, like, meet new people, putting yourself out there,” she said. “I think it’s all about making new connections, honestly, and having fun.”
