Emporia State Associated Student Government (ASG) will be hosting Clash of Colleges: Stinger Showdown 5:30-8 p.m., April 24 outside Profit Aquatic Research and Outreach Center.
“We are really just wanting to have an annual campus event from now on in the spring,” said Alyssa Cole, chairperson for ASG’s Campus and Community Relations committee. “In the fall, the res halls do Hornet Games, and we want to kind of mirror that but in the spring with the whole campus.”
During Clash of Colleges, faculty and students of the four academic colleges as well as the Graduate School and Honors College will compete against each other in the hopes to win the College Cup. There will be seven events including canoe races on King Lake, the egg race and tug-o-war; all in the hopes to boost school spirit, according to Cole.
This event is part of a larger push to bring administration, faculty and students closer together according to Bella Price, ASG President and senior history and education major.
“(ASG events) last semester, and part of this semester, has been focused a lot on administrators so this one we wanted to bring it into faculty,” Price said. “We get a lot of connectivity with faculty in classes but this is a fun casual connection. You might play tug-o-war with one of your professors.”
Similar events have seen success at other area schools. Wichita State University has had a Clash of Colleges event at the beginning of each academic year since 2015, according to The Sunflower, Wichita State’s student newspaper.
The first 30 people from each school to register for the event will receive a free t-shirt. Registration is live and the form can be accessed here. Registration closes at 5 p.m. April 10th.
