Emporia State’s annual “Can The Bods” competition with Washburn University concluded earlier this month with over 35,000 total cans raised, exceeding Associated Student Government’s goal for the initiative and out-raising the Ichabods for the fourth year in a row.
Can The Bods raised a total of 37,324 total cans with the dollar-to-can conversion, which included 32,824 physical cans donated and $2,255 in monetary donations. This year’s donations broke the 2024 record of 36,893 cans, which was calculated at the time using a higher can conversion rate.
Washburn brought in roughly 27,000 cans during the competition. At the Turnpike Tussle game on Nov. 8, ASG President Azwad Zahraan and Vice President Josh Manahan pied student body leadership for Washburn in the face. The act is tradition, as the student leadership for the winning school pies the leadership of the losing school.
In February, Zahraan and Manahan will celebrate the win with the “polar plunge.”
ASG partnered with on-campus organizations as well as multiple organizations in the Emporia community to encourage a Can The Bods success. In the partnership with Greek Life, the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and Phi Delta Theta fraternity won their annual “Canstruction” event, where sororities and fraternities partner up and build structures out of the cans they collect for the initiative.
All proceeds from the drive will go directly to Corky’s Cupboard in Memorial Union, a free food pantry for ESU students. Corky’s Cupboard is open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays or by appointment.
